Boston, MA - Sculptor Jonathan Sherman has completed a life-size bronze bust of Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci in honor of the 500-year anniversary of the artist’s death. The bust is an open edition and measures 25.5”x 16” x 12”. The unveiling, which is open to the public, will take place on Thursday October 10th, from 6-7:30pm during a celebration in the artist’s studio, located at 112 Washington Street in Marblehead, MA. Refreshments will be offered, as well as a brief talk by the artist about his intimate relationship with the Renaissance master.
“Leonardo has been a guiding light for me for many years. I have studied thoroughly with the mind of an artist all of his drawings and paintings, which have awoken within me a richer appreciation for the subtleties of the world in which I live,” said Sherman. “Through my intimacy with Leonardo’s work, coupled with having lived for many years in the center of Florence, Italy, the city that supported Leonardo’s early artistic development, a spiritual kinship was fostered between myself and the Renaissance master. This enabled me to endow the portrait with a sense of his spirit, in addition to a physical likeness.”
The anniversary is being celebrated with events throughout 2019, including major exhibitions at The Queen’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace and the Louvre Museum.
The first casting of the sculpture has been purchased by Maddox & Partners of Naples, Florida, and will be exhibited in their upcoming outdoor wine & sculpture garden in the Bayshore Arts District of Naples, Florida. Five additional bronze busts, part of Jonathan Sherman’s “Great Thinkers” series, have been commissioned by Ms. Maddox and will be installed in the wine park to accompany the acquisition of the da Vinci sculpture.
Jonathan Sherman’s artwork has been purchased and commissioned by individuals and corporations throughout the United States and in Europe, including the band Reed & Caroline (VeryRecords), and Hotel Tournabuoni in Florence, Italy. Seven of his works are in the Eijk and Rose-Marie van Otterloo Collection, and two of his works are in the collection of Robert Freson. Boston, MA – Artist Jonathan Sherman welcomes the Handel and Haydn Society to his Marblehead studio for two concerts on November 9, 2019. This collaboration is a celebration of music and art at the highest level. H+H’s virtuoso musicians will perform jewels of the Baroque on period instruments in the intimate setting of the artist’s studio.
The evening was conceived by Jonathan Sherman, Elizabeth Sherman, the artist’s wife and director of the studio, and H+H President David Snead. They wanted to offer a cultural experience similar to concerts from when the music was originally composed. The H+H Orchestra will perform works by Vivaldi, Bach, Handel and Telemann. The performances will be followed by a reception with the musicians and the artist and an opportunity to explore the studio and experience the works of art. The artist has recently completed a life-size bronze portrait of Leonardo da Vinci in honor of the fifth centenary of the Renaissance master’s death. The first casting has been sold to Maddox & Partners of Naples, Florida, but will remain on view in the studio for the concerts.
The Studio Concerts went on sale September 26, 2019 and tickets immediately sold out.
