This sculpture portrays Confucius — teacher of teachers, leader of leaders — at a formative moment in his life, when inspired thought was beginning to take shape as transformative action. One of the most influential thinkers in human history, Confucius laid the philosophical foundations that have guided Chinese culture for over 2,500 years. He believed in the innate goodness of human beings and taught that this virtue must be nurtured through respectful and ethical living. For Confucius, the cultivation of a harmonious society begins with the individual: by first establishing virtue within oneself, one can influence the family, the city, and ultimately, the nation.

Hypatia (pronounced hai-PAY-shuh) was one of the most extraordinary women in recorded history. A mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, and inventor, she devoted her life to exploring the mysteries of the cosmos — and through this exploration, cultivated a deep inner clarity and peace. In her time, Hypatia was revered as both a teacher and a luminous presence. Students — men and women alike — traveled from across the known world to study with her, seeking to unlock the mysteries within themselves and live in harmony with what she called “the One.” While not known for introducing original philosophical doctrines, Hypatia attained a profound sense of peace through her mastery and faithful embodiment of the Neoplatonic tradition. She realized that the path to wisdom was not through novelty, but through the full and sincere application of timeless truths. She is depicted here as a figure of both compassion and conviction. Her presence endures as a beacon for those who seek illumination through self-knowledge and the life of the mind.
